Court: being gay a result of child abuse

Australian tennis great Margaret Court has waded further in controversy, telling the Sunday Herald Sun she believes homosexuality may be the result of child abuse.

She told the newspaper “many, many” gays and lesbians she knew of had been abused which caused them to be attracted to the same sex.

When asked whether she believed sexual abuse led people to homosexuality, Court told the newspaper: “Yes. You look at a lot of them, that’s happened.”

The comments follow intense backlash from the LGBTI community after Court, a senior pastor at Perth’s Victory Life Church, recently indicated she believes homosexuality is a choice and supports so-called conversion therapy for same-sex attracted people.

In an opinion piece published in this week’s Herald Sun, Court reaffirmed her stance that homosexuality is a choice and voiced her opposition to gay marriage, because it is against the word of God.

In the editorial, Court said Australia is blind to its “sliding lifestyle” and losing touch with fundamental Christian values.

“Minorities are now making it harder for the majority,” she said.

“They are increasingly taking everything that is good in society and pushing it to the side.

“Looking back, you can see that there has been a steep decline, especially when it comes to the issue of sexuality.

Court then said homosexuals choose to be gay.

“In the Bible it said that homosexuality is among sins that are works of the flesh,” she said.

“It is not something you are born with. My concern is that we are advocating to young people that it is OK to have these feelings.”

“But I truly believe if you are told you are gay from a young age, soon enough it will start to impact your life and you will live it. If somebody is told they are gay they often start to believe it.”

Court said she is also opposed to same-sex marriage because children need a mother and a father.

“I can’t understand, if we are a blessed nation under a biblical Constitution, why there is such a push to change it? We will only start to tear away at the rich fabric and sustained values. Then God will take his hand off our nation and the lights will go out.”

“That is why I believe we need to protect marriage because it has been God-ordained from the beginning.

“God told man to be united with his wife and to multiply on earth.”

  1. Margaret (although I assume she will not actually read this which is a pity.)
I am a Christian. I raised two beautiful children, who were never abused by anyone, yet my beautiful son, who is also a Christian, is gay. HOW DARE YOU….. HOW DARE YOU!

  2. I have a confession to make – am a hetorosexual sorry now I have outed myself, tried to give it up.

  3. Just keep ranting and shooting yourself in the foot kooky lady. You’re just giving us more ammunition for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.

  4. How utterly ridiculous. I’m gay, and was raised in a loving and supporting home by my parents. And she is regurgitating the moral fabric story so often pushed by those who share her backwards stance on gay marriage – tell me Margaret, have the lights been switched out in the Netherlands, Spain, etc as a result of gay marriage? Perhaps someone should switch your lights out. What a detrimental contribution to society she is.

  5. i`am a 64 year old gay man from a normal loving family and i find such stupid comments very insulting this woman should just go away and leave the rest of us to live our lives the way we wish i don`t tell her how to live hers

  6. Adultery prostration masturbation per marital sex, sex in temples, orgies! Haveing sexual thoughts when a woman is married or menstrual , any sex or sexual thinking out side the marital matrimonial bed and only missionary style is then allowed, eveything else is an abomination. Bat’s pig’s shellfish and some figs are all abominations. Rape slavery stoning to death murder and massacrers is all GOOD with conditions. Unicorns and dragons that can fly to heaven are REAL it’s in the Bible.
Margaret court PFLAG or my parents should sue her.

  7. “There are a number of studies supporting Court’s statement re abuse. Look around.”

I knew it wouldnt be long before her apologists arrived. Studies no doubt commissioned by the church eh Ron.

  8. She knows every gay person does she? And her homosexual conversion “therapy” has been proven to be a failure and also extremely damaging.

Can we sue this old cow and her church? Anyone?

  9. one more reason to abolish organised religion. it is primitive , it encourages prejudice and is holding back progress at every level and in every society on earth. seriously.

  10. Not all children that were abused become homosexuals. It’s not that homoexuality is the problem – it’s that people can’t deal with or wish to recognise child abuse in its myriad forms, emotional, physical and sexual. Sexual abuse is rampant: just check the statistics. Worse still, from direct experience as an advisor/confidante decades ago, most children did not report their sexual abuse to their own parents.
The anger emanating from these comments surprises me. What of the little kids that were repeatedly sexually abused and today as adults are gay?

  11. I really want to respond in an intelligent fashion and not go off half cocked, but honestly, this woman is out of control and her vilification of gay and lesbian people is bordering on criminal. If she was vilifying ethnic minorities in a similar fashion, she would be I jail by now. I’m all for free speech, but surely this has gone beyond that?

  12. As a young lesbian brought up in a loving family traditional home it infuriates me beyond words to read such crap. How can someone in this day and age honestly believe such things? It’s beyond me. She really does need to be stopped. We need more education out there, such small minds!

  13. her opinion on what she believes has no proof to it. there is no probably way to determine how a person is gay or straight. and again the factor of religious beliefs is thrown into the mixs. seriously. if the minority is making it harder for the majority then what is the difference when the majority is doing the samething.

lets put it this way, lets remove the fact of margaret court is a australian tennis player and her religious beliefs and all we have is a woman with her opinion. as far as my concern with this is, she is someone who obvisously doesn’t understand what it is like to be on the other end of this stick, when you are told that your way of life style is wrong. unless you have all the facts about how hard it is to be a person that is critized through newspapers and damnified religiously. how does one’s sexuality interfer with one’s religion. if you dont like something, dont “force” your ways and beliefs onto others. this whole debate about gay marriage and how it affects everyone is starting to make some person who are LGBTI left out in the cold and in the dark.

if you cant work with people into making the children of the future into a possible future for all future children then butt the hell out.

i am not trying to offended people in what they believe, im just tried of hearing of religion and homosexuality being the head story of this country because some people cant just accept this sort of lifestyle.

  14. I am over trying to understand her ways, I am over hearing this shit all over the news.. I shouldn’t let it get to me but this is seriously getting to me. I am OVER IT!

  15. What an unintelligent person she is. She should find a cave somewhere and read her book, away from society.

  16. If there is a correlation between child sexual abuse and subsequent homosexuality then let’s see the research.

  17. Oh thats the last straw. Light your torches lords n ladies I’ve had just about enough of this bitch.

  18. my beautiful, loving parents will be distressed to read this. It’s so ridiculous we shouldn’t even be reported what some extremist crazy thinks. she is unwell.

  19. can not belive they would publish so much crap , she is so un australian we have a right to be who we are why should i not have the same right cause iam gay let hope this rubish way of thinking dies with her generation

  20. This bitch needs to be stopped. Do you have any idea how much damage she is doing to gay kids who may be contemplating ending it all cause of the fear loathing and rejection this woman spits forth like venom?

  21. Now Margaret.
So it’s abuse as a child now. So who did the abuse then ? Who are these
” gays and lesbians ” you know ?
Was the ” abuse ” from church ministers?
You really need to have a Bex powder , a nice cup of tea and a good lie down !!
Your ” church ” that you are a founder of, needs a serious reality check.
Founders of organisations like the one you have, haven’t a very good track record of being truthful when these organisations are put under scrutiny .
Swaggart and company come to mind !!

  22. So all the abuse by the Churches in Orphanages and further by Priests in Congregations has caused people to turn to a Homosexual lifestyle … is this why it bothers her so much because she believes the teachers of her faith must have caused it all. Guess the Priests were abused as well, seeing they mainly abused little boys, whom I assume by her logic are all now hetrosexual.

  23. I was abused I’m straight.. my God.. verbal diarrhea personified! I have 2 girls ones straight ones lesbian.. Abuse has nothing to do with it.. it’s because that’s who they are and I am so bloody proud of the both of them.
