Gay rights conspiracy claim

A Liberian newspaper has claimed there is an international conspiracy to bribe the country’s parliamentarians to decriminalise homosexuality.

The New Dawn newspaper claimed the US-based Foundation for the Protection of Gay Rights was to make $2 million available to the Parliament’s Speaker and another MP for the purpose of paying off MPs, with further cash to be delivered once a gay rights bill was introduced.

However, the Foundation for the Protection of Gay Rights does not exist.

A New Dawn editorial called homosexuality “desecrating, abusive and exploitative,” and “un-African”.

“Morality is being undermined in our country at the highest level. It is about time that civil society organisations, chiefs, elders, religious and traditional leaders speak out and make their position known; no time to sit on the fence and watch because the future of our country is at stake.”

Another opinion piece warned that similar forces were pushing to allow white people to become citizens of Liberia.

“We as a nation and continent are facing Herculean and incessant attacks at infesting and invading our heritage,” Sieh M Blamo wrote.
