THE highest-ranking trans woman military official in the world is set to become the first trans* panellist on ABC’s Q&A tonight.

Group Captain Catherine McGregor is currently serving as the speechwriter and strategic adviser to the Chief of the Air Force.

She entered the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1974 and graduated to the Royal Australian Infantry.

With a career in the Australian Army spanning over 40 years, McGregor was awarded the Order of Australia in 2012 for her service.

She began transitioning in July 2012, and in this year’s Mardi Gras she was a key speaker and trans* advocate at several events.

McGregor was also a key speaker at this year’s Pride in Diversity awards.

Tonight’s Q&A panel — which also features The Australian foreign editor Greg Sheridan, prominent human rights lawyer Julian Burnside, federal Shadow Education Minister Kate Ellis and Higgins federal Liberal MP Kelly O’Dwyer — is expected to respond to audience questions that focus on terrorism and counter-terrorism, civil liberties, and more.

It is also anticipated that McGregor may also comment on the Courier Mail’s recent front page on the murder of Brisbane trans woman Mayang Prasetyo, in which they used the term “she male” in the headline and juxtaposed it next to an image of the victim in a bikini.

Q&A airs at 9.35pm on ABC.

  1. She did *such* an amazing job when she was unexpectedly put on the spot about such deeply personal stuff! Extremely off-topic I must say! Cate’s such a brave woman. I’m grateful for her courage.

  2. Every time I turn on the TV, there is always “never-ending” discussion about suicide bombers, ISIS and terrorism. So I just go outside and have fun and enjoy life, while not watching the TV anymore!
