Ambassadors program on hiatus

Ambassadors program on hiatus

The City of Sydney has put its late-night precinct ambassadors program and portable public urinals on hiatus but will revive both again next summer, with plans to make the ambassadors an annual fixture.

“They have been incredibly successful, assisting more than 500 people every night this summer,” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. “The sheer volume is amazing.

“The precinct ambassadors called ambulances for people in trouble, helped stop aggressive behaviour and just made people feel safer and more confident getting around the city at night.

“They are also extra eyes and ears on the street and have worked with the police to stop incidents from escalating.
“The feedback we’ve had from the public and the police has been extremely positive.”

Over 16 weekends the ambassadors logged 18,451 instances of giving help, reported 40 incidents to police and gave directions to public toilets, public transport and cab ranks, and information about licensed premises to thousands of people.

The ambassadors made their last appearance during the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade.

Pairs of ambassadors walked George St on Friday and Saturday nights.

Other ambassadors staffed an information kiosk outside Sydney Town Hall on those nights.

  1. Thanks Clover for putting the urinals on the streets over the weekends because they stopped the party people pissing on my doorstep every night! Oliver I’m sure you’d be saying the same if you had to clean your front door every morning!

  2. The portable urinals are a disgrace to sydney and are so tacky. Thanks clover, bet you wouldnt want one in your garden.
