New addiction group for LGBTI community
A new self-help group dealing with addiction and catering exclusively to the LGBTI community is to be launched.
SMART Recovery Australia is a model of addiction treatment that, unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, does not view addiction to substances like alcohol and other drugs as a disease, rather it views addiction as a set of behaviors that can change with appropriate motivation, skills and support.
A general group had been run by the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service for a number of years, however after feedback that there were specific addiction issues relating to the LGBTI community it was decided to focus on this section of the community specifically.
The new group will be run in conjunction with the Albion Street Centre, which has considerable expertise in the area of HIV health.
The group will be open to all who are interested and will not require instant participation from newcomers. The group is run out of the new Twenty10/GLCS building, 45 Chippen St Chippendale, corner of Meagher St every Monday (apart from public holidays) from 6pm-7.30pm. Everyone is free to contribute, but if they just want to watch that is also ok.
