Singapore’s LGBTI festival a success

singapore-flagSingapore’s major annual LGBTI event, Pink Dot SG, attracted huge crowds on Saturday night, with an estimated 21,000 attending the event in the city-state’s Hong Lim Park.

This year’s large increase in attendance has come with some high-profile corporate sponsorship, including JPMorgan and Google.

Pink Dot SG was established in 2009, and is named for the event’s key feature, the crowd forming a ‘pink dot’ visible from overhead by using mobile phones and torches.

Despite the increasing popularity of Pink Dot SG, homosexuality remains criminalised in Singapore, and last month new enforcement procedures were introduced for the country’s ban on gay website content.
