Convicts onto a winner

The Sydney Convicts have placed well in the Walker Cup, a third-grade division competition, securing a place in the finals, which start on July 30.

President David Whittaker is optimistic about the gay rugby club’s chances.

“We decided to enter the Walker Cup as a challenge for our team and as an excellent tool for developing our new players. This is a big step up from our normal level of play for the team and it has been a challenging competition,” he said.

“It has prepared us very well for next year, when the Convicts need to play our strongest rugby ever in Manchester in order to win the Bingham Cup and the Bingham Bowl and bring both back to Australia.

“It has been a very positive experience for us and we have built a solid foundation for next year’s Bingham campaign. We’ve seen some exciting new players join the team, we’ve learned a lot about rugby and we are stronger for it.

“It has take a lot more than just playing, though, to get to this point and it has included a lot of community support.”

Off the field, the Convicts will hold another round of ‘Trivia Madness’ on Friday, August 19 at the Paddo RSL. The event, hosted by the glamorous Candy Box, is a fundraiser for the team’s trip to Manchester next year.

“Trivia Madness is fiercely competitive, entertaining and packed full of surprises,” Whittaker said. “This is an hysterical Convicts tradition and an important fundraiser. Come celebrate the end of a great season.”
