Ignite your fire

Fresh from a recruitment drive in June, LGBTI community cheerleading team Ignite Sprit is preparing to broaden its performance horizons and become a ‘community performance team’ in the lead-up to the summer cheering season.

The squad would still love to have anyone with a flair and passion for dance, performance, cheerleading, flag-waving and shaking pom-poms involved in the global Cheer for Life program in Australia, regardless of ability or experience.

Participants just need a passion to make a difference, a can-do attitude and a willingness to learn.

Ignite uses all-star cheerleading and dance to raise awareness and funds for services providing support for people dealing with life-challenging obstacles such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. It’s best described as ‘philanthropic cheerleading to assist and support the community’.

The cheerleaders volunteer at events, providing extreme stunts and powerful dance routines to entertain, inspire, and motivate audiences into giving.

The 2010 Mardi Gras parade marked the beginning of the Cheer for Life dream in Sydney, as Ignite members cheered up a storm on the night. Elsewhere, Ignite members have performed at Gay Games opening and closing ceremonies, parties and community awareness events. Cheer for Life aims to provide hope, funding and support at all levels of the LGBTI community.

“Ignite Spirit is a collective group of adult teams around Australasia who utilise all-star philanthropic cheerleading and dance performances to support community organisations, teams and projects,” Ignite program ambassador Dion Arlotta said.

“It is a means to entertain, inspire and motivate audiences to strive for their personal best while celebrating the beauty and diversity in all people. It’s a program that aims to unify different individuals toward a common cause.”
