QSAM to change name

Melbourne’s queer sports umbrella group will rebrand itself this year, taking a leaf from its Sydney counterpart, Team Sydney.

Queer Sports Alliance Melbourne (QSAM) has announced the group it will change its name to Team Melbourne.

“The new name brings us into line with other city-based queer sports groups around Australia and across the world,” QSAM said in a statement.

“We especially feel it will give our local clubs a clearer identity at international events.”

The group is now looking to develop a new logo to make the name change official.

QSAM boasts a membership of a range of LGBTI-friendly sporting clubs and individuals in Melbourne, including swimming, rowing, tennis, soccer and rugby clubs.

The group is looking forward to competing in the 2013 Antwerp International Outgames in August.

  1. I think QSAM will (rightly) in my humble opinion, disagree with the opening paragraph… Melbourne never takes a leaf out of Sydney’s book.

The name change in more designed to reflect the understand of the Federation of Gay Games, that teams will be city rather than country or individually based. There have been legal issues with QSAM taking on the name Team Melbourne in my understanding; these have been resolved to allow Melbourne’s G&L sporting bodies to be rebranded.

The great work of QSAM will continue; promoting safe, friendly fun events, competitions and sports clubs for our community to enjoy.
