Rhythm and bruise

The Amazonian ladies from the South Sea Sirens will soon lace up their skates for a clash with undefeated Victoria Roller Derby League champs, the Queen Bees.

Roller derby is a female-dominated contact sport played on skates. A tamer version of the game can be traced back to the 1920s, however, it wasn’t until the ’60s and ’70s that the thematic player names and brutal elements were introduced.

Each team sends five players on to the track, one jammer and four blockers. The jammers of each team line up ahead of the rest of the team. It is their job to make their way around the track and overtake other players. Jammers receive one point for each team member of the opposing team they overtake.

The blocker’s role is fairly self-explanatory — to stop the opposing team’s jammer getting through the pack.

You can see the girls in action at the Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough for Rhythm and Bruise on September 10.

Tickets $10 for adults, $5 for children and those under 5 years are free. Doors open at 7pm. The match starts at 8pm.
