There has been a massive show of support for Channel 7’s breakfast program Sunrise this morning, as celebrities and marriage equality supporters came out in Melbourne and Sydney for the “I Do” special.

The special event collaboration with Marie Claire magazine for its campaign for equality was not without controversy, however.

Coming under pressure from the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) in the days leading up to the special coverage, Sunrise producers held a debate between gay marriage advocate Dr Kerryn Phelps and the ACL’s Jim Wallace.

The debate was quickly marred by comments from Wallace who slammed the show for covering the event and compared marriage equality campaigners to Nazis.

“This whole campaign would do great credit to Joseph Goebbels,” he said.
