ACT cuts civil union waiting period

Same-sex couples could be able to form civil unions in the ACT within a few weeks after the Territory’s parliament reduced the notiifcation period under its threatened civil union legislation last night. The amendment reduced the notification period for a civil union from one month to a week, ABC News reported. But the ACT government has conceded civil unions could still be nullified if, as expected, the federal government overturns the law.The ACT government has asked the governor-general to seek amendments to the civil union law rather than backing its removal.
