Be nice and dig deep, Mayor urges

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has called on Sydneysiders to take up philanthropy. With over 700,000 not-for-profit organisations registered in Australia, there is certainly a variety of choice.
Addressing the Sydney Community Foundation last week, Moore spoke of the sense of reward she derived from donating her mayoral salary to charitable organisations.
In the five years since Moore established the Lord Mayoral Salary Trust, $750,000 has been donated to more than 30 projects, including gay and lesbian initiatives and charities like Twenty10 and the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.
“Where possible I want the Trust supporting innovative, cutting-edge projects that need seed funding or have difficulty getting funds from other sources,” she said.
As well as gay and lesbian organisations, Moore was referring to other services which benefit the community, including mental health and substance abuse rehabilitation programs and the Women and Girls Emergency Centre, which has provided ongoing support for lesbians and transwomen in need.
