Dodge returns with Caliber

After an absence of over 30 years the all-new Caliber spearheads the Dodge offensive back into the Australian car market. Its bold styling is typically American and Australians cannot get enough of them. We’re selling all of the Calibers that we can get our hands on. When supply frees up we will sell even more, according to Gerry Jenkins, managing director of Chrysler Group.

This crossover, five-door hatch is a vehicle that combines the functionality of a sedan and an SUV. Strong sculpted front-wheel arches, broad shoulders and a distinctive hood give Caliber its proud, powerful stance. Large, crystal headlamps and available fog lamps complement the Dodge grille and create an integrated look that completes Caliber’s sporty appearance.

The Caliber is also full of thoughtful ideas. The armrest lid features a unique flip pocket for storing a mobile phone or an MP3 player. The glove box converts to a chill box when the air conditioning is turned on and comfortably holds four cans of drink. If you need a torch, the Caliber comes standard with one of those as well.

Carrying on the fun theme, the accessory packs include a 458-watt Boston Acoustics sound system with nine speakers, including subwoofer and swing-down tailgate speakers, fantastic for your next picnic or trip to the beach or a simple barbie at home -“ if you have the luxury of a backyard.

Trim levels and inclusions in the Caliber are on par with the price but the choice of materials is disappointing. All touch surfaces, other than the seats, are made of hard-feel plastic which is a little disappointing, taking an edge off the overall presentation of the inside of the car.

Caliber’s engine range is now complete with three petrol and one diesel model. With fuel-efficient car sales booming in Australia, the Caliber comes to the party with combined cycle ranging from 8.1L/100km for the 2.0L petrol to 6.1L/100km for the diesel.

Considering the height of the Caliber, the ride quality is good with a little body roll when cornering. The 18-inch wheels with their imposing five-spoke alloys are standard on the top-of-the-range R/T model and give a firm grip on the road.

The Dodge Caliber appeals to buyers looking for a vehicle that stands out from the crowd and gives them the flexibility to do more in terms of seating friends and storing gear.

Prices range from $23,990 to $31,990. There is a choice of transmissions -“ four-speed manual or CVT auto. The engines available are: 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.4L DOHC petrol and 2.0L CDR turbo diesel.
