Dykes ready for ride of thanks

Sydney’s iconic Dykes on Bikes have been oiling their machines and shining their leathers in preparation for this weekend’s Thanksgiving Ride.

The ride, which will take place on Sunday, will see members personally drop off donations to the group’s key charities.

This year $5,000 will be split between Pink Ribbon Ride for Breast Cancer Research, Monica’s Doggie Rescue, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service and The Luncheon Club.

Dykes on Bikes president Lisa Usher said she was hoping for good weather on Sunday.

“The members are always more than happy to donate their time and money to our chosen charities and I hope they will all come out and see exactly where their money goes,” she said.

“This is the first time I know of where we have actually invited the rest of the club to come along and I hope that it becomes a regular event.”

Usher said although Dykes on Bikes is best known for its foreplay at the start of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade each year, charity work and fundraisers were a vital part of the group’s social diary. Events on the Dykes on Bikes calendar include the Bike and Tattoo show, the Black and White Ball and the DOB Christmas Party.
