SGLBA bestows honours

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association (SGLBA) announced the five winners of its 2010 business awards at its Long Table Canapés evening last Tuesday.

The awards recognise and honour successful GLTBI businesses and business people for their achievements, positive workplace environment and continued community impact.

“We were extremely impressed by all the nominations we received and narrowing the nominations down to five winners was a difficult task for the judging panel. All nominees are very deserving of recognition,” SGLBA president Paul Lee-Maynard said.

“We are proud to be able to reintroduce the SGLBA Business Awards after an absence of several years. I believe the SGLBA Business Awards encourage engagement within the community and go some way towards recognising the diverse range of skills, talent, creativity, energy and passion we have within the GLBT community, and in particular of people in business, corporate and large organisations as well as those with entrepreneurial spirit.”

“It is a privilege to recognise the 2010 winners of the SGLBA Business Awards.

Awarded the Excellence Award for Corporate Managers, Mike Gordon, systems and technology strategy manager in IBM Australia and New Zealand, is a dedicated professional who displays commitment to diversity, corporate leadership and the GLBT community.

James Forbes, known for his work with ACON and the World Wildlife Foundation, was awarded the Lifestyle Entrepreneur Award.

Taking out the Young Persons Award is up-and-coming chiropractor Dr Cody Hanish.
A prominent figure in the community, Reece Farmilo, and the team from Out Travel, were awarded the Enterprise Award.

Vicki Harding and Jackie Braw of Flying Penguin Extraordinary Educational Toys, (with an online store and shopfront in Newtown), were awarded this year’s Entrepreneur Award.

Flying Penguin promotes sustainable values and business practices, and upholds the spirit of diversity while catering to the GLBT and wider community.

Award winners are automatically nominated for the ACON Honour Awards to be held on September 30, where the winner will receive the Honour Business Award 2010.

“Partnering with ACON and the Honour Awards works to strengthen relationships between our community groups, as well as marking a rite of passage for our community going forward,” head of the SGLBA awards sub-committee Terry Preeo said.
