ACT boss joins marriage call

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has added to the chorus of political voices pledging support for marriage equality.

Gallagher told The Australian newspaper that, while she isn’t married she understands that, unlike gay and lesbian Australians, she has the option.

“I have a choice, you see. I’ve not needed to do that for my happiness, but I understand there is a group in the community of people who want to exercise their choices,” she said.

A clear distinction was also drawn between the ACT’s Civil Partnership Scheme and full marriage equality.

Gallagher joins the majority of ALP state and territory leaders who support marriage equality, including Victorian state leader Daniel Andrews, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings, and NSW ALP leader John Robertson.

Australian Marriage Equality national convenor Alex Greenwich said Gallagher not only joins many in the ALP leadership on the issue, but also represents the views of most Australians.

“This level of support and advocacy from within the top ranks of the ALP will be key to delivering the outcome that a majority of Australians will want from Labor’s National Conference later this year,” he said.

  1. Why is marriage government/religion controlled anyway? Far as Religion goes keep it in Church as they used to say. They have their hands in every pie. I’ve been recently informed you even have to put your hand on the Bible to explain yourself when it comes to speeding fines now? What if you don’t believe? If someone says to me to swear on the Bible I may certainly take that literally. Getting back on marriage who said Christianity & Governments have the monopoly on marriage anyway? It means different things to different people over thousands and thousands of years for a start. It’s discrimination plain and simple putting religion and politics aside. Not being gay myself I do know it all comes down to science at the end of the day. You are who you, you shouldn’t be TAXED or EXCLUDED for it. If I get married, there certainly won’t be a priest, religion or even a church involved that’s for certain! Australia wake up and the smell the coffee, its very cold now. Its 2011 … NOT 1911!!!!!!!!!!
