Anti-gay candidate wanted ‘open marriage’
The wife of anti-gay Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has claimed in a series of interviews that he had requested an open marriage.
The conservative former Speaker of the US House of Representatives has been a vehement foe of same-sex marriage during his long political career.
His second wife, Marianne Gingrich, told the US ABC News program and The Washington Post that he had offered her the choice of an open marriage or a divorce when he revealed he was having an affair with his 28-year-old congressional staffer, Callista Bisek who he later made his third wife.
The former Mrs Gingrich said she denied his request to keep a mistress.
A day after he admitted the affair in 1999, Gingrich delivered a speech on family values, titled ‘The Demise of American Culture’, to a group of Republican women in Pennsylvania.
Gingrich led impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton for allegations of perjury involving his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
He has consistently opposed gay marriage and gay adoption despite having an openly gay half-sister, and in 2008 he supported California’s Proposition 8 ballot measure which overturned the state’s same-sex marriage laws.
Another anti-gay Republican candidate, Texas Governor Rick Perry, suspended his campaign yesterday and threw his support behind Gingrich.
Perry became the subject of ridicule after numerous gaffes and missteps, including an anti-gay campaign ad that became one of the most disliked YouTube videos in history.
A “family values” crusading “christian” twit, that is all this man is and indeed what most of the republican party is made up of.
Hypocrites, bible thumping loonies and warmongers – yep, thats conservatives for ya!
