New gay marriage ad might surprise you

Marriage adMother’s Day is upon us this weekend and a new marriage equality advertisement is urging anyone who wants to raise children to consider what it could mean for them.

The 40-second commercial shows a pregnant woman in a opposite-sex relationship getting an ultrasound, before being asked if she wants to know what the baby is.

The answer they get might surprise you.

Steve Minon created the commercial that was commissioned by PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and went live on Monday this week.

“We hardly consider whether the child will be straight or gay, but we should. And we should also consider the life that they’ll lead as a result,” PFLAG national spokeswoman Shelley Argent said.

“On average, one in five families has a loved one who is gay or lesbian so it’s a relevant question.

“Marriage equality should be an issue to us all regardless of socio-economic standing, religion or culture. Any mother can have a gay son or lesbian daughter to love and it’s heart breaking to see our children treated unfairly.

“Ms. Gillard, Mr Abbott this is an issue that can be brought back into parliament at anytime, please do so, sooner rather than later. You’ll be doing it not just for gay and lesbian people but for all families.”
