Broadway pop production hits town

Make sure you have Monday 10 March down in your diary because tickets go on sale for one of the longest-running Broadway musicals in years and it’s coming to Sydney with an all-Australian cast.

Altar Boyz is equipped with dazzling dancing, memorable melodies but more importantly is under the direction of Kate Gaul.

The Australian premiere season starts at the Seymour Centre on Wednesday 11 June. The cast includes the very sexy Dion Bilios, Tim Maddren, Cameron MacDonald, Jeremy Brennan and Andrew Koblar.

The musical has even been nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards in the same year and honoured with two Drama League Awards. Cast member, Jeremy Brennan, said that there are hundreds of die-hard Altar Boyz fans in America called the Altarholics.

They have seen the show many times over and even have a website dedicated to the production. It’s the longest-running show off-Broadway, he said.

So what makes this musical so special?

You’d think it was an Australian show because it takes the piss so well. If you come along thinking you’re going to see a slick pop concert, then you will be satisfied, Koblar said.

However, if you want to come and laugh at the music that filled our cassette Walkmans all those years ago, then you will love it even more.

It’s camp and five hot guys in tight pants singing and dancing -“ what wouldn’t the gay community like about that?

At times the production resembles a concert as the Altar Boyz are performing the last night of their Raise The Praise Tour.

We are trying to save souls, but that’s where the humour begins. You see, the show is a pop concert in the style of New Kids On The Block, he said.

The songs are brilliant. They have somehow gathered every boy band clich?ou ever laughed at, then twisted them together with a so-sincere religious message -“ it’s genius.

Tickets start at $44. Bookings on 9351 7940 or www.seymourcentre.com.au.
