Cash-strapped decorating

If you feel you’ve outgrown the lava-lamp and bubble-gum carpet throw look, or you just want to finally rid yourself of all that el-cheapo mismatched budget-but-functional furniture bought in your youth, now’s the time to redecorate.
While I’d love to tell you that, being gay and childless I have an astronomical disposable income at my leisure, sadly, I do not. But there are oodles of options for the financially compromised make-over magician.
There are plenty of places to find a bargain, from massive chain stores to smaller, boutique shops. Get creative; visit auction houses, second-hand junk dealers and op shops, there’s a lot more to them than you may think.
Recently I found a swanky genuine leather two-seater sofa available in red or black – I was more than tempted to go for red – for $699. At another store I found a lovely clear lacquered birch frame armchair with the ivy printed cover for $189.
Coffee tables are a great idea to freshen up a living room that has become a little stale (or stained). I recently found a simple black table for $89 with matching side tables to create an edgy, but elegantly modern new look.
For the spaciously challenged, a mirror in the main room of the home is as important as oxygen. For a home with a modern spin, a throw-back to ye old France can be a stunning addition.
Another bold yet easy way to spin some style into a room is with a great big canvas covered in some interesting colours. A large piece of fabric can have a similar effect, as well as adding texture.
Decorating is all about details and personal tastes combined with new ideas.
