Help Abbott’s gay sister get married

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) wants people to help Opposition leader Tony Abbott’s gay sister get married after she came out in an feature article last weekend.

In a photo from the This is Oz project last year, Abbott’s sister Christine Forster is shown holding a placard which reads ‘I Love Her. Marry Me?’

Her partner Virginia Edwards is holding a sign that says ‘And I love her. Live with it!’

In an interview with The Australian, Forster revealed she was in a same-sex relationship and supported a change to the Marriage Act to allow gay couples to marry.

AME convenor Alex Greenwich has called on people to partipate in a House of Representatives survey about the two marriage equality bills currently before Parliament.

“Make sure Australia’s support for marriage equality isn’t misrepresented. Complete the survey now to show your support for marriage equality,” Greenwich wrote.

  1. Catholic priests who devote their lives to servicing their male god are effectively in a gay marriage with their god of choice. And they seem to resent that gay humans may soon be free to have their relationships with other humans recognized formally.

  2. Abbott’s not changing his position on this any time soon.

He might SAY he would consider it … but he never would. If he didn’t actually believe that gay people were second class citizens then he would have done something about conferring equal rights while he was in government.

11 years of Liberal Government, don’t forget; 11 years and the gay community got NOTHING over that time.

Labor, however, has delivered on many measures to bring full legal equality … not the final hurdle yet, but lots of stuff that is very beneficial.

So Gillard, whilst arguably (and it is an arguable position) is opposed to gay marriage, she has actually delivered positive, real-life reforms. Abbott and his Liberal mates have done squat, regardless of what they might promise now and in the future.

Strip back the rhetoric and look at what we have actually RECEIVED from both sides of politics and you’ll see that Labor wins hands down.

  3. Seems to me that the person stopping her from getting married is JuLiar Buzzard and her bunch of cronies.

  4. Abbott’s opposition to gay marriage is for this term only. What he does after 2013 is left unsaid. Have you questioned him about whether he will change his policy position when he reveals his policy for the 2013 election? You could be in for a suprise… I suspect he will allow a conscience vote from 2013 onwards. Rather than trash him, why not approach him and ask if he’d consider a conscience vote after the 2013 election so he can keep his current election promise and then change his position for the 2013 election? Do you want gay marriage or do you want to bash Tony Abbott who loves his gay sister and doesn’t want to distress her by bringing her into a political argument? I wouldn’t be so quick to buy into the Mad Monk argument anymore… Abbott has a lot of grey areas and I suspect this will be something that can be changed after the 2013 election.
