Latin art for MCA

Brought up in Santiago Del Estero, Argentina, during the war-torn 50s, eager art fanatic Sebastian Lopez found life a struggle. He is now a luminary in the arts world for his input into Latin American contemporary art and culture.

He obtained his masters degree in Art History at Tucum?University and has studied many postgraduate courses. But the smart and openly gay man had to venture out of South America, moving to the Netherlands in 1981.

It was not easy to be gay during the 1950s and most things were underground. When I went to university, gay life was somewhat easier, unlike the rural areas. Some parts of Europe are very open-minded too, Lopez told Sydney Star Observer.

Lopez, who speaks several languages, has now moved back to his home continent, taking on the role of artistic director for a museum in Rio de Janeiro.

Lopez is also the curator for Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art winter exhibition The Hours, which features artwork from many of the world’s greatest artists.

It’s the very first time that a very large Latin American show is going to be presented in Australia. There will be artwork from Cuba, Mexico and Chile, he said.

The world doesn’t really know much about Latin American art and how diverse the work is from country to country. It’s going to be a very comprehensive show.
