Maupin plucks the right strings

Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City may be turned into a musical, the author has revealed.
Maupin was in Sydney last week for the Aurora Plucked in the City fundraising dinner, which raised more than $10,000 for gay and lesbian organisations.
Aurora chair Jane Marsden said she was thrilled with the response to the dinner, held at Bilson’s Restaurant.
“This has been our most successful Plucked dinner so far,” she said.
“Not only did we have a record number of guests – for both us and Bilson’s Restaurant – but importantly we raised a record amount of funds for this event, coming in at just over $10,000 for the night.”
Plucked in the City, a fundraiser for the Aurora Group, was a night of fine 3-hat food from Tony Bilson, wine from Burton’s Premium selection and entertaining words from Maupin.
Maupin read a chapter from his new novel Michael Tolliver Lives, before taking questions from dinner guests.
“Armistead did reveal juicy gossip to the room,” Aurora director David Wilkins said.
Tales of the City may be made into a stage musical, with the possibility of Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters composing the music. He also revealed that Michael Tolliver Lives will likely not be the last of the Tales of the City series.”
Money raised will go towards Aurora’s support of community organisations like Twenty10 GLBT Youth Services and the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service.
Marsden said the success meant Aurora was preparing to hand out a second round of disbursements.
