Maxi’s Movies

Maxi’s Movies

My first memory of ever going to the movies was when I was visiting my crazy aunty Chrissie. She was a huge jolly woman who cooked for hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We lined up for 20 minutes getting tickets and supplies from the candy bar. Chrissie used this time also to smoke about 20 cigarettes before having to go in, where she would have to go cold turkey for a couple of hours.

I remember falling in love with Christopher Reeves as he flew across the screen as Superman, not deterred by Chrissie’s ashtray smell or the constant rustle of her popcorn box. Leaving the cinema on a huge high, we stood out the front for half an hour as Aunty Chrissie topped up her nicotine intake.

Since that day I have always loved going to cinemas or watching movies, either falling in love with the leading man or falling in love with what the leading lady was wearing. From Superman to Gone With The Wind, I’m not picky with what I enjoy to watch.

So why all this chatter about movies? Well, I finally got one, my very own movie night. Starting on Monday 28 May at Stonewall Hotel, we will be welcoming Maxi’s Movies. We will be screening some of the latest releases, but also some of the gay classics that have help mould all our lives, such as Stonewall, The Wizard Of Oz and of course Mommy Dearest.

But to start off with something that we all will remember for a long time, we will be featuring the last release that had us all either at the cinema numerous times or first in line at the video shop, Shortbus.

We will be starting at 7:30pm for an 8pm screening, so have your popcorn and Jaffas at the ready as I’m thinking it’s going to be a hoot. I promise there will be an intermission for all those who need a pee break.

EYESPY Last Saturday night I was horrified to discover that showgirl sensation Dallas Dellaforce was accosted on Oxford Street by some idiot who proceeded to rip her hair off and kick it around the street. Not standing for such behavior but still looking fabulous, Dallas went straight after him to retrieve it but was confronted by the guy claiming he would glass her with the bottle in his hand. After regaining her hair she raced to the Midnight Shift security guard, who was unable to do anything as the young man had run off. Once again the safety levels are at such a low especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Please report any anti-social behavior to police and always travel with friends or do as I do and just join other gay or lesbian groups who are walking in the same direction. We truly have to look after each other.
