The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) is preparing for its Annual General Meeting. The AGM provides a unique opportunity for members to review the organisation’s work, engage with our campaign priorities and to elect a new committee of management.
2010 has proved to be a very successful year for the GLRL. We led the lobbying process in NSW to ensure greater relationship and family recognition. In May, the NSW Government introduced a Relationships Register to provide some documented and determinative legal recognition for couples.

Our decade-long campaign for the recognition of children living in same-sex families resulted in reforms to the Adoption Act 2000 earlier this month, to permit same-sex couples eligibility to adopt children.

In addition to our domestic work, the GLRL partnered with the Sexual Rights Initiative to prepare a submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, holding Australia to account on legislative inequalities that continue to plague sexual minorities.

With our legislative successes in NSW, the GLRL will now look to reprioritise campaigns and objectives, focusing on federal anti-discrimination legislation for sex, sexuality and gender diverse persons, and marriage equality.

Our campaign achievements would not be possible without the support of our members. Membership is foundational to the sustainability and success of the organisation. Increasing our membership base strengthens our lobbying profile in the public sphere.

It is also crucial that we build a diverse and comprehensive membership base that engages with activism around social justice and equality. This year, more than 500 people used our online letters to take action to end adoption discrimination.

While we welcome supporters and donors, members exercise a distinctive and important role within the organisation. Each member has the right to inform policy, governance and direction of the GLRL. This is done primarily at the AGM. Members also receive free entry to our monthly social networking ‘Rights Nights’.

With the AGM now only a week away, Wednesday October 6, why not show your support, become a member, come to our AGM, and have a say in how the GLRL progresses into the future. Visit www.glrl.org.au or call 9571 5501 to find out how to become a member.
