Globes are alright with Glee

This year’s Golden Globes had a decidedly queer bent thanks to television phenomenon Glee and lesbian parenting flick The Kids Are Alright.

The film, which follows the story of the children of a lesbian couple tracking down their biological father and bringing him into the family’s lives, picked up the Globe for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) at the awards.

Annette Bening beat out her co-star and on-screen partner Julianne Moore to pic up the Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) Globe for her role as one half of the lesbian couple.

But the gay gold rush didn’t stop there thanks to ground-breaking television series Glee.

As well as being named Best Television Series the show also picked up two acting awards for openly gay stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer.

Lynch, who plays William McKinley High School’s cheer leading coach Sue Sylvester, was named Best Supporting Actress (Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television) – adding another trophy to her already crowded mantle.

“I am nothing if not falsely humble,” Lynch told the crowd.

“So I would like to share this tonight with Ian Brennan, one of our three writers. He created Sue Sylvester, and every heinous, insane line that comes out of my mouth was written by him. He’s a deranged young man… This is yours too (although I will be holding on to it).”

Colfer, who plays gay teen Kurt Hummel, was clearly surprised at his Globe win for Best Supporting Actor (Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television), and dedicated his win to kids who battle against bullying on a daily basis.

“Most importantly to all the amazing kids that watch our show. The kids our show celebrates who are constantly told no by the people and environments, by bullies at school, that they can’t be who they are or have what they want because of who they are,” Colfer said. “Well, screw that kids.”
