Dancesports to raise the roof

If you’re into movement, music and razzle dazzle, the Australian Same-Sex Dancesport championships is well worth a visit to St Kilda Town Hall this weekend.

The annual event is held as part of the Midsumma Festival and will feature couples competing in a range of dance styles including the Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep, as well as the faster-paced and passionate paso doble, cha cha cha, salsa, new vogue and street Latin.

All eyes, however, will be on the competition of the night, the Latin American A-Grade final which sees couples fly in from around Australia and New Zealand to take part.

Hosts Damian Nicholas and Kaye Sera will inject some humour throughout the proceedings and the audience can participate in social dancing.

The event is hosted by Richmond same-sex dance studio Dancecats.

The championships are on Saturday, February 4, 6-11pm. Cost $20, $15 conc. Bar and meals available, strictly no BYO.
