Free debate commitment welcomed

Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a commitment from Prime Minister Julia Gillard to real debate at the ALP National Conference in December.

“I want there to be debates, I want there to be surprises … I don’t want to get my way on every precise detail,” Gillard said in a speech at Old Parliament House on Friday.

“I don’t want everything sewn up by some meeting at midnight the night before — I do want change.”

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) national convenor Alex Greenwich said Gillard’s statement was encouraging for supporters of marriage equality both inside and outside the ALP.

“Gillard’s commitment gives us hope that nothing will be allowed to stymie the clear desire in Labor’s rank and file for marriage equality, including her own opposition to change,” he said.

In related news, AME has resurrected The Potential Wedding Album project after its website was destroyed when web-hosting company distribute.it was hacked in June.

The Potential Wedding Album (TPWA), which went online in October 2010, featured photos of more than 400 same-sex couples who want to be treated with equal respect under the law.

AME had the data recovered and is now hosting the project on its website.

Couples who want to be included in the project are urged to submit a photograph, and supporters encouraged to leave a message on the website.

  1. I say she has my vote but I want to see these debates, I want them open for the whole country to see and I demand our voices be heard on this issue! Bring on the Wedding Cake indeed Julia and I will be a loyal little voter with a big voice in your favour. :D

  2. I have come to the conclusion that the only thing Julia would look good in is desperation. We have the votes, show us the wedding cake.

  3. Hmm I wouldn’t trust her on this as far as I could throw her. Gillard has never supported gay rights even when she was a student politician. If she’s making conciliatory noises on this its because she’s desperate for gay votes.
