Gay marriage in Portugal?

Portugal’s Parliament is expected to approved same-sex marriage on Friday, website dallasvoice.com is reporting.

If passed, it needs to pass another reading before becoming law. That is expected just in time for the Pope’s May visit to the country.

The country is traditionally one of Europe’s most conservative, but is currently ruled by a Socialist-led coalition. But in contrast to Spain, where same-sex marriage passed over the objection of the Catholic Church and other conservatives, the new law is expected to pass Portugal’s parliament without much debate.

Conservatives have said they favor civil unions with all the rights of marriage except adoption.

Portugal elected its first openly gay lawmaker in September.

  1. 10 years ago same sex marriage did not exist – now 10 nations have it, but still in 2010 Australia is not one of them.

It is a slap in the face that here is Australia we have a dusty old law called the Marriage Act that has been sitting within government for years and years.

If I ever was a politicians I would rip-up that law into little pieces!!!!!

    Points to make:

    * Marriage is about adults making choices – NOT CHILDREN!
    * Marriage is about loving your parther and showing that you love them in front of family and friends!
    * Marriage is NOT about gender or sexual orientation!
    * Marriage is NOT about the bedrock of society!

The Australian government is still stuck in the 1937 mode!!!!
