Matthew Mitcham wins at Diving World Cup
In a repeat of his performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Matthew Mitcham has won the Men’s 10 Metre Platform category on the final day of the 2010 FINA Diving World Cup in Changzou, China, preventing the Chinese team from making a clean sweep of the event.
Chinese divers won seven out of eight titles at the FINA World Cup, though a new team event was won by American divers.
Mitcham was in fourth place after his first two dives, but performed a flawless reverse three-and-a-half somersault and tuck on his third, receiving 99 points.
Then China’s Huo Liang scored 108 points on his fourth dive, taking the lead from Mitcham.
In his final two dives, Mitcham scored 97.20 and 100.80, winnig the title with a total of 562.80 points and beating Huo by 7.4 points.
After the win, Mitcham told FINA Press,”It is a very close competition in which everyone shows his best and that pushes me to try my best.”
“It’s much harder for the champion today than it was two years ago at the Beijing Olympics,” said Mitcham.
The 2010 FINA Diving World Cup, which was successfully held on June 2-6, attracted 146 divers from 33 countries and regions.
