Stars join call for marriage

Three leading Australian film industry figures have signed a statement in support of marriage equality ahead of Australian Marriage Equality’s (AME) Equality Dinner in Sydney on Wednesday, January 25.

Oscar-winning costume designer Lizzie Gardiner, film critic David Stratton and Emmy Award-winning actor Hugh Jackman made their support known on Tuesday.

“Marriage should be about love and respect, not discrimination,” the statement reads.

“Australia is at its best when we value equality over prejudice and fear. That’s why we support marriage equality for same-sex couples.

“Marriage equality will help remove discrimination against same-sex couples and their children. It will also benefit marriage by allowing it to embrace more loving committed couples who uphold its values.

“It’s time for Australia to join the other nations that have benefited from this important reform.”

AME national convenor Alex Greenwich welcomed the support.

“Hugh, David, and Lizzie are all happily married straight supporters of equality,” Greenwich said. “They know how important marriage is to a couple and their families, and like most Australians they don’t feel same-sex couples should be denied the meaning and benefits of marriage”.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert director Stephan Elliott, who is calling for all prominent Australians to go public with their support, will announce the support of other well known Australians at the dinner.

“Australians are more accepting of same-sex couples than ever,” Elliott said, “It is time our laws reflected this, and this year our politicians will have the opportunity to make a positive change for good by supporting marriage equality.”

Speaking alongside Elliott will be former AMA head Professor Kerryn Phelps and her wife Jackie Stricker-Phelps, columnist Mia Freedman, and marriage equality activist Rodney Croome.

Radio personality Geoff Field and his partner Jason Kerr will MC the dinner which will be held at the award-winning Quay Restaurant.

Tickets are still available through Daisy Tickets and there are discounts available for SGLBA and Mardi Gras members.
