Brumby pledges GLBTI support

The Brumby Government has made its strongest commitment to the GLBTI community yet, announcing  wide ranging support ahead of the November 27 election.

If re-elected, the Government would commit $2.5 million over four years to support the community in a variety of anti-homophobia initiatives.

“We believe in a society that embraces diversity,” Premier John Brumby said in a statement.

“A re-elected Brumby Government would support our gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities and ensure their members are safe, valued and respected.”

Support would include $400,000 for  a GLBTI peak body to represent community; establish a whole-of-government advisory committee on GLBTI issues; provide $50,000 annual ongoing funding  the Midsumma Festival; commit $100,000 over two years for a summit with Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria to address GLBTI issues; $200,000 over four years to support the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard; and $200,000 for the Anti-Violence Project to support victims of homophobic crime.

ALSO Foundation CEO Crusader Hillis said it was a “red letter day” for the Victorian GLBTI community.

“Through these election pledges, the State Government has offered the resources that will better enable GLBTIQ Victorians access to full citizenship within the State of Victoria.”

“The Government’s planned investment in community organisations will allow our aspirations for capacity building and the development of our community to become a reality”.

  1. There must be an election on, oh and Labor is on the ropes in four inner city seats. I mean, this is like attempting to justify another subscription to JOY Radio when they purvey BMG as having something to do with music. It is crap.
They have only approached us as a last guard attempt to hold power. It has nothing to do with Gay rights.

This funding is so full of caveats it makes BHP Billoton’s take over of Potash look like kinder banter. Broken down into various contributions it is insubstantial, and shall be watered down further upon Labors’ back-room deals with the christians.

This mob have been in power some ten years. Their response to our needs has been limp at best. One need only look at the so called equal opportunity legislation.

About time to vote this mob out, they have their super and have sponged off the State for too long. Get rid of them.

  2. I would like to add the Labor Party still has a problem with the GLBTQI Community. They offer only part acceptance. I want full acceptance and laws to support this.

I am not half gay, or a little bit. Neither is the love for partner of 9 years.

What Labor is offering is not enough to move my vote away from the Greens.

  3. I think the message is lost on no support for Same-Sex Marriage. Same-Sex adoption is not on offer, only another look into it. I am just not convinced by the package to change my vote.
