Say ‘I do!’ today

Look out for people selling badges for marriage equality on Friday, March 2, if you’re in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, as part of I Do Day, a new annual fundraising drive in support of Australian Marriage Equality.

I Do Day is the brainchild of Alisha Elliott for whom the issue hit home after she became engaged to her fiancé Aaron and realised how many of her friends and family members were legally prevented from marrying the person they loved.

“I realised how much of a privilege it is to be able to marry the one you love and how crazy it is that there are so many people in Australia today who can’t legally express their love through marriage,” Elliott said.

“What people can expect on the day is a chance to buy a badge from street volunteers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. We’re also inviting people to update their Facebook or Twitter status to ‘I Do’ to share their message of support with their communities.”

In Sydney and Brisbane, badge sellers will be at CBD train stations and on the streets, while in Melbourne the badges will only be available through local retailers due to council laws.
